We hear these two words used interchangeably all the time. Renovation. Remodeling. A homeowner will call and say, “We want to renovate the kitchen,” and five minutes into the conversation, we realize they want to move a wall, change the layout, relocate appliances, and pretty much rebuild half the room.

Most people assume they need a bigger kitchen. Then we walk through the house together. Five or ten minutes later, the conversation usually changes. The kitchen is not always too small. It is just working against them. You see it almost immediately.

There is a moment that happens in a lot of bathrooms. You open the cabinet under the sink to grab one thing. A bottle falls over. A hair dryer gets tangled in a cord. Half a roll of toilet paper rolls out onto the floor. You find yourself moving six things just to reach the one thing you actually needed.

Some kitchens look perfectly fine in photos. Then you try living in them. That is usually where the problems show up. Someone is unloading groceries while somebody else is trying to make lunch. A backpack lands on the counter because there is nowhere else for it.

Most people do not start out wanting an addition. Usually, they spend a few years trying to avoid it. The spare bedroom becomes an office. Then the office becomes a guest room.

Tile seems pretty straightforward when you first look at it. You pick a style you like. Pick a color. Pick a pattern. Install it. Done. At least that is what most people think before a project starts. Then reality shows up. The grout lines are uneven.

Most people do not plan a whole home remodel. At least not at first. Usually it starts with one room. The kitchen feels outdated. The bathroom is too small. The flooring has seen better days.

There is something special about an older home. The woodwork has character. The rooms feel solid. The neighborhood has mature trees. The house has stories.

Most homeowners do not wake up one morning, look around, and suddenly decide to renovate their house. Usually, it happens little by little. You stop noticing certain things because you've seen them every day for years. The squeaky floor by the hallway. The cabinet door that never closes quite right.

A bathroom usually does not bother you all at once. It starts small. The drawer sticks again. The towel bar is loose again. The shower door makes that same annoying sound again.

Most people don't wake up one morning and decide they need a kitchen remodel. Usually, it starts with a bunch of little things. You're trying to make dinner while someone is standing in front of the refrigerator. The coffee maker takes up half the counter. The junk drawer barely closes anymore. You open a cabinet and something falls out because there's simply nowhere else to put it.
