Whole Home Remodeling
in Crystal Lake
Perhaps it's not a single room that's bothering you, but rather the whole house. The kitchen feels cramped, the living room is disconnected, the hallway is a bottleneck, and there are rooms that nobody really uses. You love the area, and life in Crystal Lake, but you wish that the house didn't feel so put together and worn out.
We're usually called in by Smart Building Solutions, LLC to take homes that feel just right, and improve them from end to end. Whole home remodeling can go beyond simple new paint and flooring, and reach into making connections, flows, and interactions with the house more pleasant for everyone.
Crystal Lake has a vast variety of homes; those built in previous decades usually have additions or renovations done by the last owners, while more recent builds can have the main floor split, enclosed kitchens, and rooms serving unclear purposes. Even your new home might feel like it has disconnected rooms.
Some people start with a list. They know that they want to open up the main floor, redo the stairs, finish the basement, and redo the front entry. For others, they know in general that the house just feels chopped up, but aren't sure why. We walk through the house with you and talk through the ideas, laying down a path that connects the rooms of the house.
Why People Call Us for Whole Home Remodeling in Crystal Lake
We’ve Seen It All
We've walked into rooms in the main floor with several doors crammed into one small space, seen houses with floors, and different heights all throughout the house, and even tackled bonus rooms that were turned into storage by people who had no other idea what to do with them
That doesn't scare us off. We'll assess the whole home's structure, layout, and general use, and begin to sort out what to keep and what to change.
They’re Built to Last
With major portions of the house being renovated, the work should continue to feel solid long after everything is painted or finished. We'll focus on the parts that you won't see, such as substructures, the floor, walls, and openings, to make sure that the work we do lasts. We'll focus on making sure that the house feels pleasant and sturdy before the final paint goes on.
Made Just for You
Some people want their homes to be more open for everybody to gather in one space, while others prefer areas for people to work, study, and relax in separately. You might have started working at home more, and need a proper office in the house, or your kids have gotten older and some rooms just don't feel right. We ask how you use the house and what to change so that you're prepared for how things will move forward. We'll base the new floor plan off of the space you have and how you'd prefer to use the house.
We Keep It Simple
We'll lay out the major chunks of the renovation, as well as the steps that we'll take to complete them, so that you're always aware of what we're doing and why. We'll also let you know what to expect from the whole project as a whole, so that you know what's going to happen and what's going to be affected. If we run into an unforeseen issue after opening up a wall, we'll lay it out and let you know what options we have.

Our Whole Home Remodeling Process
We break the whole home remodeling process down into stages that are simple to understand.
Consultation and Walkthrough
We walk through the house with you, discussing the whole project. You'll be able to point out the rooms and areas that you want changed, as well as the ones that you're happy with. We'll begin to discuss what changes are possible given the structure of the house and your budget. The consultation lets us get a feel for how the whole project will come together.
Plan the Layout and Look
Now that the initial impressions of the house have been talked through, we'll design the layout. We'll consider where you'll enter the house, drop off bags and coats, flow into the kitchen, where people will gather, and what areas need extra privacy. We'll be able to start talking about your preferences for the flooring, doors, trim, fixtures, lighting, and other finishing touches, ensuring that the look of the house is cohesive.
Custom Build
Few houses have ideal, straight walls, floors, or openings in the whole house! Especially with additions and renovations, there are often odd angles and room transitions that need to be worked into the plan. We'll take the conditions of your Crystal Lake home into account as we build out the project. Stairs, openings, walls, and rooms will be altered to meet the existing structure and feel like a part of the house.
Construction and Phasing
Here, we'll begin the biggest changes to your home. Walls could be opened, and floors removed, in order to prepare the house for new finishes and layout changes. Larger whole home remodeling projects could be broken up into phases to ensure that there's still a place to live. We'll let you know what areas of the home are going to be unavailable, what we plan to do each week, and what we want you to know about the upcoming weeks. Keeping the house organized is important, but keeping life simple for you is our priority.
Walkthrough and Punch List
As we near completion, we'll be able to walk through the house with you and make sure everything is completed. We'll open doors, run the water, and check seams to ensure that everything feels right. If anything feels wrong, don't worry! We'll make a list of what to do and what to fix so that the house feels less like a construction zone.

Why Crystal Lake Homeowners Work with
Smart Building Solutions, LLC
We'll understand that the conditions in a Crystal Lake home can uncover additions or renovations that weren't obvious.
We'll build according to the house and not force it into unrealistic measurements.
We'll lay out plans and finishes that make sense for how you live and not just for one pretty picture.
We'll keep you updated on the work, so you know what we're doing and what to expect.
We're here until the very end, not just until the biggest parts of the remodel are done.
Crystal Lakehomes and Midwest Weather
Homes around Crystal Lake tend to be affected by freezing winters, humid summers, muddy spring weather, and several other seasonal changes in between! Floors are exposed to snow, salt, and wet shoes, while doors and woodwork can expand and contract with the humidity. Older additions and renovations can also feel the effects of temperature changes differently than the core house.
If these factors are ignored in a whole home remodel, drafts, cracks, unpleasant rooms, and noisy floors might appear later.
When we undertake whole home remodeling in Crystal Lake, we consider the life of the house and its effects on people year-round. Insulation, windows, doors, flooring, and transitions all need to be taken into account, so that a home feels solid and comfortable through a cold February morning, a humid July afternoon, and every season in between.
